From Public Service to Artisan Craftsmanship

Why serving others led me to create something with my own hands.

There are seasons in life when God gently changes the direction of our path. Not because your purpose has disappeared—but because it's taking on a new form. For much of my adult life, my work centered around public service.

I spent years working in public administration, public policy, nonprofit leadership, communications, and advocacy. My days were filled with budgets, legislation, community meetings, organizational leadership, and helping families navigate difficult situations. I believed deeply in serving others, and I still do.

Service has always been at the heart of who I am. Yet, over time, I found myself longing for something different. Not because I wanted to stop serving—but because I wanted to create.

Learning to Build Instead of Fight

Much of my professional life involved solving problems.There were policies to improve, budgets to manage, organizations to strengthen, and people who needed someone willing to stand beside them.

It was meaningful work.

It was important work.

But it was also work that often required standing in the middle of conflict. Being the one standing up and taking the arrows, being the first one to yell foul and being strong enough to walk through the fire.I realized that while I loved helping people, I also longed to spend time creating something that brought peace rather than responding to crisis.

Something tangible.

Something beautiful.

Something that people could hold in their hands.

Finding Joy Again

After months of campaigning for State office, suffering from a loss I wasn’t prepared for- questioning my core values about who I am, what do I do next, and experiencing the 5 stages of grief. One day my husband said something that completely changed the direction of my life.

He looked at me and simply said, "You are free to do as you please, to be creative and find your joy."

At first, those words felt unfamiliar. Like many people who spend years caring for others, I had become accustomed to placing my own creativity on the back burner. There was always another meeting.

Another deadline.

Another family to help.

Another problem to solve.

His encouragement reminded me that creating wasn't selfish. It was part of how God designed me.

A New Beginning

In the fall of 2025, our family gave our lives to Christ. That season transformed us. It changed how we looked at our home.

How we raised our children.

How we spent our time.

How we viewed work.

Instead of asking, "What should I accomplish next?" I began asking, "How can my work glorify God?" That simple shift changed everything. Johnson & Co. was born from that question.

More Than Soap

People often assume we're simply making artisan soap. In reality, we're creating something much bigger. Every product begins with a belief that home matters. That slowing down matters. That gathering around the dinner table matters. That caring for our families matters. That beauty has a place in everyday life. When someone lights one of our candles after a long day, unwraps a fresh bar of soap, or gives one of our products as a thoughtful gift, I hope they're reminded to pause.

To breathe.

To appreciate the ordinary moments that often become life's most meaningful memories.

Carrying Service Forward

Although my work looks different today, I don't believe I've left public service behind. I've simply found another way to serve. Today, service looks like carefully researching ingredients. Testing recipes until they're just right. Wrapping each order by hand. Writing notes of encouragement. Supporting American farmers and small businesses whenever possible. Creating products that people feel good about bringing into their homes. The mission hasn't changed. Only the tools have.

Crafting with Purpose

At Johnson & Co., every product reflects something we value: Faith that guides our work. Family that inspires our purpose. Craftsmanship that honors tradition. Stewardship of the resources we've been entrusted with. Grace that reminds us progress is often found in small, faithful steps. Those values shape every decision we make—from the ingredients we choose to the way we package each order.

Looking Ahead

Johnson & Co. is still in its early chapters. There is much to learn, much to build, and many dreams still taking shape. But if this journey has taught me anything, it's that God often prepares us for tomorrow through the experiences of yesterday. The skills I learned in public service—leadership, stewardship, communication, perseverance, and a heart for serving others—didn't disappear. They became the foundation for this new season. Today, I still believe in building stronger communities. Only now, that work begins a little differently.It begins at the kitchen sink. Around the family table. In homes filled with warmth, hospitality, and grace. And if Johnson & Co. can help create even a small part of those moments, then I know this calling has been worth answering.
